With the modern defense loads available, you won't find much difference between the 9mm and 40 S&W. Both will put holes in bad guys and mess up their medical records really bad.
Handle both and make your decision on how well one or the other fits your hand.
I'm a little biased on lights, lasers and wigets on pistols. I find lights to be useful. We outfitted out shotguns with Streamlight TLR-1 LED lights and recently one of our guys used it while chasing a bear. On handguns you either have to attach and detach or buy a holster that accomodates the light. Still, I find the lights useful.
Lasers in my opinion are a gimmick. I don't see or have much use for them outside of being a training tool to illustrate poor marksmanship fundamentals.
I think you are much better off with the light and a set of night sights
