I'm a big fan of the Remington 597s - I'm up to 3 of them and they're cheaper than a 10/22, more accurate "out of the box" and they balance well because they're a bit heavier. Marlin also makes some good .22s and very accurate IMO, but I never liked the feel and balance of them. The 597 is also usually supplied with a real open sight instead of the cheap BB gun sights that seem to be on most new .22s these days. Could be a factor if your scope takes a hike, I've actually kept one of mine unscoped and I've probably taken more squirrels with that one than the other two combined.
