Major Dave, that reaction from prisoners is pretty much the same as learned by Wright/Rossi/Daly during the research for their book "Under The Gun". (1985; Univ. of Fla. Press.) Interviews with felons imprisoned for violence with firearms, in Raiford Penitentiary. In general, violent felons approve of gun control laws.
Blue Train, Marko is not defining civilization. He's pointing out that the gun enables civilization. (Or other weaponry, going back to pre-gun centuries.)
To bring rifles into the discussion: Of people shot with rifles, some 2/3 die and 1/3 live. Handguns? 1/3 die and 2/3 live.
