10mm is no louder than other supersonic round I've fired.

As a reloader, I appreciate all of the cheap .40 bullets out there, which makes it less costly for me to reload 10mm than .45 ACP.

I typically shoot a 180 grain bullet at 1,200 fps from my Glock 20, which is about the performance I expect from the 175 grain Winchester Silvertips I usually carry. This load is only mid range by 10mm standards and nuclear when compared to.40 S&W. Recoil is on par with 158 grain .357 magnums at 1100 fps bullets from my K-frame Smith and Wesson. (Low bore axis for the G20 makes the difference here.)

Heaviest bullets are 200 grains typically fired around 1,200 fps, although some loads might exceed that. In order to match the penetration of that load a .45 ACP would need close to 230 grains moving at the same speed.

If your bullet is 12.5% larger, then you'll need 12.5% more weight to achieve the same sectional density.

Depending upon the load, you'll get better penetration from a 10mm pistol with greater magazine capacity than a .45 ACP. You'll find .40 S&W like loads, mid range loads like mine, and magnum level loads for hunting. You won't get anywhere near that kind of versatility from a .45 ACP.
