One thing you occasionally see is the factory puts out an oddball batch of rifles because they were using up parts they had sitting around. Barrels for the Model 70 were profiled, chambered, and roll-marked without ever being put on an action, so that batch of barrels could have been sitting in the warehouse for years before it got used up. The official factory offerings for that year may not have included the 222 Rem, but a distributor may have received a batch of rifles that were chambered for a dropped chambering.
