I headed out the other day to this same spot, leaving the tripod and modern guns at home; instead took the .45 TC Hawken percussion.

After getting my "open sight eyes" adjusted, I started busting them pretty regularly. I ended with nine confirmed kills, and yes the 45 was enough gun.
