At the risk of being tiresome, I'll repeat my initial observation -

Considering this, I can only advise that the new reloader read carefully and try to determine what the context is. Sometimes, the dimension itself is an aid to determining what is being described.
Since language can be inexact, and because bad habits are hard to break, I will simply suggest that the term "headspace" be treated somewhat loosely, until the reader can figure out the writer's intent.

There is, without doubt, a valid definition of headspace (as has been explained above, by several), and there also appears to be some inertia involved in getting that definition universally accepted.

There are also correct terms for the dimensions for which "headspace" is incorrectly applied, but these have their own inertia.

So, perhaps we can't fix it, but we can all agree that it is well and truly broken...
