Fixed power scopes... What's good and what's available?

I want a low powered fixed power scope for my M1A Scout 18". 4x max, 25-40mm objective lens size.

I don't like "scout" style extended eye relief scopes. I tried it and took it off. I don't care for the off-balance feel it generates.

I have an ARMS #18 mount to go directly over the receiver this time.

Type of shooting I will be doing:
1. Hunting - Elk, Deer, Javelina, Black Bear. Wide open rolling hills to medium-dense forest (50 yards to 300 yards).
2. Plinking - Target shooting and beer can harrassment. Open desert and formal ranges (100 yards to 500 yards).
3. Other uses - It's my EBR. I want it to still be somewhat nimble, and I will be buying quick release rings for it, but I want to be able to make out a target as close as 25 yards if necessary.

I was thinking about the Leupold FX-2 4x33mm scope. Anyone have one of these?

Who else makes a classic, no frills low-powered fixed scope that might suit my needs?
