If a thread is simply deleted, how is the originator of the thread or respondents to the thread going to know why it disappeared if they can't see the closing post?
Often when a thread is deleted, we get a public question of "why was my thread deleted?" or we get private emails or PM's asking the same thing. Closing an OT or duplicate thread with an explanatory post eliminates most of those unnecessary communications.
