Unless the M1A is a glass bedded and fitted match rifle, you should break it down and clean it after every firing session. The M1A is not as affected by carbon as the M16, but still needs some cleaning. Light grease is recommended for the op rod raceway, left bolt lug race way, op rod guide, and inside the op rod. I am sure others will chip in with advice as well.
