Years ago I had a Marlin in 35 with a long barrel, pistol grip and 1/2 magazine. It was rusty on the outside so I cleaned it up and refinished it. The bore was bright sharp and shiny.
I killed a few mule deer with it and it was always very effective. I wish I had never sold that old rifle. It was a real good tool.
