do the right thing and support a small family owned gun shop
Why is this automatically the right thing? How do you know the original poster lives anywhere near a family owned gun shop? How do you know that, even if he does, that it's not a terribly run business which overcharges for its goods? I've been to quite a number of family owned gun shops, and just like any other business, there are good examples, average examples, and terrible examples. Just because a business is family owned doesn't mean it's the "right thing" to patronize them - the OP has to do the right thing given HIS circumstances, not yours.

did you know that since 94 that 90% of small gun shops have closed due to lack of business???
If you're going to quote a statistic, be prepared to back it up. Please cite your source for this information. Further, right now, given the current climate, anyone in the business of selling firearms and related supplies should have zero trouble remaining afloat.

i sure would hate for walmart to be our only local source for guns
And what evidence is there that this is occurring? Quite honestly, it's usually been the mom-and-pop gun retailers that limit choices, just because they don't generally carry as wide a variety of firearms and related goods as larger merchandisers. Now, quite the opposite is true. We are blessed with an embarassingly rich array of choices, both online and storefront, from which to select the firearm(s) we want.
