In our house, my wife, Linda, and I both carry. Neither one of us would be so foolish as to play that kind of a joke as it would most likely get one of us shot.
Target recognition is a good thing; I totally agree with that. However, we're also told that action always beats reaction. It very well could be that this guy thought that the "perpetrator" was armed and already had a jump on him. In a scenario where the "bad guy" surprises me, and I believe he had "the jump" on me, I would do exactly what he did, thinking it was the only way to avoid multple perforation of my body.
The simple, tragic lesson to learn here is never scare the hell out of a man with a gun.
