Not that uncommon actually. In all the time it's taking everyone to send their pistols in they're working on the fix while the paperwork is being done. Essentially they're multi-tasking. While I agree that's a bit obnoxious, your alternative would be sitting and waiting with a gun in your possession that has safety issues. I'm not sure that's better.
