I don't hunt deer anymore but the 6.8 is reported to do just fine. The one I have was built for a friend who wanted an AR carbine that would work for deer. A few months after I gave it to him he decided that he did not like the price of the ammo so I swapped it out for a 5.56 and kept the early chambered 6.8 for myself. It will shoot into an inch at 100 with my loads. For hunting I prefer blue steel and wood over the military rifles but that is just me.
