If it is .308 Winchester, then you must be talking about an Encore, not a Contender. Right?

Recoil depends on many things including gun weight. If you don't have a scope and rings on it, it is going to kick quite a bit harder. More weight is good!

I shoot an Encore just like a .44 Magnum or other handgun. Standard two-handed grip. The front forend is mostly useful when you have a chance to rest the gun on a backpack, rolled sleeping bag, etc. Or from a rest at the range.
