One of the things that make us "seasoned" shooters is the trial and error of shooting different scatterguns. My gun safe has several guns that either did not make the grade for me, or I am still thinking about them. I have also traded or sold off many models that did not work for me. There is nothing wrong with this, it is part of the fun of getting seasoned!

A couple of ideas; Try and find a buddy or shooter who has your next "lust after" model and see if you might try it out first. Just might save you a buck or two.

I stand firmly on the ground that most recoil issues are directly related to Length of Pull. You might check and see what the LOP of your 870 is and compare that to the LOP of your Mossberg.
