A Colt Officers .45 in good condition would be well worth $500. Any commercial or GI .45 in good condition should be OK with any commercial .45 ACP load or the handloaded equivalent.

If you can find a range in your area that rents guns, you might want to try various models before buying one. Or check out your friends to see if any has guns you can try.
