 I remember around 1980, my stepfather had a rather lengthy commute to work. He used to say "I don't care if gas goes up to 69 cents a gallon, I'm still gonna drive my 4wd pickup to work"
Gas went over $1, he sold the 4wd and bought a Ford Fiesta (40 mpg or thereabouts)
