Coinneach, it's usually the other way around. It sounds as if your hammer may be rubbing against something in the back of the frame or the mainspring might be coming into contact with something. Physical inspection would determine the problem pretty quickly and I would think that any competent smith should be able to handle it. If you don't have anyone near you, e-mail me. George
