When I set rifle oal,I take a fired round an just so bump it with the sizer die so it holds the bullet I'm using,but still allows the bullet to slide in.I seat the bullet long and then carefully chamber the dummy round so as the bullet hits the lands,it is pushed into the case.When you take the round out of the gun,carefully so it doesn't hit or bump anything,I them measure coal with my comparator.That is the max coal that will fit in your chamber.Now set your seater die .02 shorter,you are now .02 off the lands.
As long as that length fits in your mag,your good to go with your normal load work up. I don't even look at the book coal. It is almost meaningless to me.That is just what THEY loaded to and what fit in their rifle.
