Recoil is a big difference between 30-06 and the 30 caliber magnums. The magnums are more expensive to reload as the brass cases are more costly, and they use more powder. Same 30 caliber bullets in all. Here's a recoil chart showing differences in rifles. The magnums are not plinking rifles and become unpleasant to shoot off the bench after only a few rounds. I have a .300 Weatherby and love it but it's not for plinking paper targets at the range.
