it really depends on what part of the country you are in. Up in Northern IL I had a buck come in peak rut and he stopped behind some thick stuff and I had no shot. He came out a little to chase a doe that had come in and I simulated a grunt with my mouth, it stopped him and the doe took off. He stayed around looking to see what buck was in his area for too long and I arrowed him.
