I don't believe it's supposed to be held in with a cotter pin (that's the 1st time I've seen that field repair).

You pic isn't clear enough, but it looks like the little tip that extends above the thumbpiece, and is supposed to ride inside the slide, thus retaining the stop until the slide is manipulated by hand so that the small "U" notch in the slide's lower LH edge aligns with the tip, and the stop can be pressed out from the other side via pressing on the end of it's axle pin.

I would suggest you try the various parts vendors, like Numrich, Wisner's, Bob's, etc - and obtain a replacement slide stop.
