Unless the laws have changed you can hunt game with any centerfire cartridge in the state of Texas. Rimfire is the only no-no!!! I have hunted with everything from a 38special to a 454 Casull. I have taken a 14" spike with my Wilson CQB in 45acp, shooting a 265gr. LSWCHP, Keith Design. Took two steps after the shot and dropped like a stone. I have taken a Javelina, rabid Grey Fox, Coyote & 110lb. Schoat with my Hi-Power in 9mm.
I prefer to hunt with my Ruger Redhawk in .41mag. Many Whitetails, Mulies and a Spotter Fallow Deer have fallen to that gun/round combo.

From the TPWD Website:

Quote:
Means and Methods
Firearms
Game animals and game birds may be hunted with any legal firearm, EXCEPT:

white-tailed deer, mule deer, desert bighorn sheep, and pronghorn antelope may NOT be hunted with rimfire ammunition of any caliber.
shotguns are the only legal firearm that may be used to hunt Eastern turkey during the spring Eastern turkey season (see County Listing). Rifles and handguns may not be used to hunt Eastern turkey.
pellet guns and other air guns are NOT LEGAL.
fully automatic firearms are NOT LEGAL.
firearms equipped with silencers or sound-suppressing devices are NOT LEGAL.
a shotgun is the only legal firearm for hunting migratory game birds and lesser prairie chicken
