For under $1,000 you have a hell of a lot to pick from. There really isn't a single best and as you have seen, there are lots of guns that fit the bill.
I'd suggest going to a shop, trying several out, rent what you can and see what you like.
Once you narrow it down, let us know what like and see what the masses think from there.
