Making a new tube feed spring?

I know there are lots of old tube-fed .22's out there with non-functioning feed springs. Has anyone found something that will work for an outdated rifle where parts are no longer available? I just picked up an old Mossberg Palomino. Lever action tube fed .22 for a great price because of some minor cosmetics. It will load only 2 shells before the spring becomes too weak to feed the next round into the reciever.
I manage a auto-parts store and I've exhausted all of my resources. The spring is approx .25 inches in diameter and about 18 inches long. Any ideas would be appreciated.
