Can't help you with Southern California. The last time I was there, courtesy of the US gummint, I was at a little training base just outside of 29 Stumps, and they made us shoot all manner of weapons.

But, I can say with some authority, don't worry about the Marlin Jam. It normally only happens in rifles that are run fast and hard, like in SASS shooting. It's easily fixed and for most folks is never an issue.

Don't worry about the Marlin Jam unless you're running your rifle fast and hard.

That said, there's a page that explains it easily and tells how to fix it.
