Yes, that serial number would correspond to a production year of 1952, about 5 years before S&W started using model numbers. If it has a 6" barrel with a Patridge front sight, it's a K-22 Masterpiece (pre Model 17); with a 4" barrel and ramped front sight, it's a K-22 Combat Masterpiece (pre Model 18).

Neither model would be considered particularly rare, though both are very popular and command premium prices when in good condition. I don't know what the production numbers might have been, but FWIW I see lots more Model 17s than 18s listed for sale and I've always assumed that they made more of them.
