poor design, poor quality
I disagree on both. The design is perfect if you are looking for the cheapest reliable semi-auto pistol action. HP was when they designed and you should be too if you are buying one. How one measure quality can vary, but several dealers have told me they have a very low return rate. I have not heard many stories of them failing unexpectedly. Their warranty is probably the best in the business, so if there is a problem, like a bad mag or improper assembly, you don't have to worry about it.

I am always looking for them at estate/garage sales.

Forget the trade, you won't get that much out of a used Hi-Point anyway.
Around me they go for about ten dollars less than a new one which is about $30 over MSRP.
