A well armed spouse would be the best thing!
Failing that, I find the safest thing to do is park away from everything. Don't give the BG a place to hide. No buildings or other cars nearby if possible. If someone happens to park nearby while your in the store just do a quick check to make sure there's no one lying in wait.
