All out of the blue, my wife jumps in and asks what the payment would be if we put down an extra $5,000.00!!!!

Here she'd been sticking away spare money from rebates and stuff like that for some time and sticking it in a separate bank account she used to buy the dogs treats and stuff.

I'd say it depends. If it's a fund like Hal's example, where the money came from sources other than the "official" family income stream, that's fine. But if it involves any form of dishonesty about how much you make, or how much you sold something for... not so much. Dishonesty is bad for relationships....
