The exact same thing can be, and must be, said about M14 clones. Some M14's are actually dangerous to fire. The Garand-receiver rewelds used to build up M14 clones are not safe. The Federal Ordnance M14's are encountered regularly (see at least one at every gun show I go to) and are poorly made kit rifles.

Yet, this attention to FAL's being kit rifles and M14 not is odd to me. Some of the most expensive M14 clones have nearly 100% USGI parts (LRB). This makes them just as much a kit gun as any FAL.

The DSA SA-58 and Springfield M1a are both almost 100% NOT GI. Frankly, for my desire, GI parts are great and I would love to have an FAL STG-58 or SAR 48 built on an Israeli kit. But, then, I would also prefer an Armscor built TRW M14 clone.
