Two things-

In shotgun calibers....... as long as chamber can take
regular 2.5, 2.75m 3, 3.5", etc cases it don't matter how long
the chamber is or whether barrel is smooth, rifled, backbored,
whatever it still legal shotgun. IE; you can't take a 30mm
and neck it down to 12ga size and call it a legal 12ga under GCA rules.

For our 585 HE, though being over 50, we applied for and got a sporting
use exemption, under a part of same GCA act. Like others over
50 cal-- 585Nyati, 577NE, 600NE 577Snyder, 550MAg, 700HE,many of
which are grandfathered in before GCA enacted. The 14.5mm cartridge is
considered a non sporting case, so it is a DD you have to
give them 200 bucks and fill out papers.Ed
