You're right, the .243 won't work in an AR-15 platform, the OAL is too high. I just feel like getting an AR in .243 WSSM would be an undesirable compromise, though. You'll save money in the short run because all you'd need is an upper (assuming you already have an AR-15), but lose it in the long if buying ammunition. If handloading, it's probably the best option financially.
