I've been here for about 13 years, and have had a CHL for the past ten. Attitudes are pretty good here in the Tidewater area, and I've never been hassled, even when carrying openly (until recently, we couldn't carry concealed in restaurants that serve alcohol.)

We don't have a formalized "Castle Doctrine" here, but the case law favors the concept.

I would suggest getting a copy of Korwin & Maniscalco's "Virginia Gun Owner's Guide" to answer all of your questions.
