Remington developed the 223 for the military, and during the developmental stage, there were experiments with the 222 and 222 Magnum cartridges. To avoid confunsion(helped a bunch, didn't it?) when they finalized the case dimensions for the 5.56 round, they named it the 223. 5.56 is the bore diameter, while groove diameter is 5.7mm.
