I'm sorry, but my 24 years of military experience has to kick in here...the first thing to do when shots are fired is to take cover...and not to expose oneself unless it is to shoot back.

And yes, things do happen incredibly fast. I was in an electronic simulator trainer - where they play videos of scenarios and you have laser guns to shoot back. I discovered very quickly that there was not even enough time to bring the gun up from the low ready, aim and shoot. After that, I learned as soon as the situations start getting ugly to come up to full ready, aim and be ready to shoot.
