Phill- it depends on the courses of fire you plan to encounter.In our group everyone seems to use a 3-9 or something close to it. We regularly shoot from contact distance out to 200 yards, but every once in a while there's a match with nothing past 25 or 50 yards. It may be the course designs or it may be range limitations, but a big scope is a handicap in this type of match. Some competitors mount a dot scope beside or on top of the variable scope, I have a different rifle for these matches with only a dot scope. I guess what I'm trying to say here is that you really need to analyze what your needs are going to be before you can determine how to set up your rifle. This was probably no help at all...........
