Yep... case ruptures due to OOB issues... dirty chamber or weak (or improperly tensioned via the guide rods) recoil springs.

Lots of folks have .17 597s that run fine, but they are careful to properly maintain them. I never had an issue with the one I owned, but I just like my converted 10/22M better.
