Who would ever want to carry that heavy, bulky XD-40 sc as a backup?
GGGGeeeeesssssshhhhhhh... J-frame (Airweight or Airlite) way to go.

If KT is frequently carried, I don't see any benefit at all over the J (maybe capacity and weight and that's it!). That IS saying something, but not enough to convince me. It's hard to beat the inherent reliability of a J-frame.
