I am frequently around folks shooting 338 Lapua rifles with muzzle brakes. They all claim that the recoil is easily manageable - - - - for them.
What is difficult is the intense muzzle blast to the shooters on each side of the .338. It is ferocious and unpleasant. Not as bad of course as being on the receiving end of a .338, but even with ear plugs and high quality ear muffs, the noise level is nasty and the blast is actually physical.
