The original Remington design uses a spring and ball detent on the front of the barrel support ring that interlock with the "dimples" on the outer diameter of the magazine cap.

The newer "Express" models use a plastic tube that fits into the magazine tube to retain the cap.
This plastic tube has some jagged "teeth" that interlock with some machine-raised "burrs" inside the new style cap.

The only "watch out" in interchanging cap designs is to keep an eye on the cap to be sure it doesn't vibrate loose under recoil.

The "O" ring is the best answer I've seen to secure an 870 cap to interchange caps.
