+1; FYI the 3rd-gen S&W DA/SA automatics (called "Traditional Double Action" or "TDA" in S&W-speak) normally have 4-digit model numbers, and also include several "Value Series" models- the 908, 909, 910, 915, and 410.
These guns are incredibly tough and reliable, and are available for a song due to abundant police surplus. They should be readily available under your price cap, especially if you're willing to accept a DAO gun, which are somewhat unloved and generally carry price tags $20-$40 less than the equivalent DA/SA version.
