Forgive the momentary thread hijack, but this one I had to answer.

Cats will, overall, live MUCH longer if they are in the house all the time. They do NOT need to be outdoors. When they are out, they can come into contact with all kinds of predators (including the neighbor dogs, never mind coyotes). A 100% indoor cat has a long healthy life. NO pet cat should be let out. Barn cats and farm cats (spayed and neutered) have a role that involves being outside and that is a different issue. But house cats are better off for being indoors. </hijack>

The fuss about the contest, IMO, is that it is in fact a CONTEST. Had they just declared a 3-day hunt for coyotes, nobody would have gotten their knickers in a twist about it.
