That form was added sometime after 9/11 to assuage fears that millions of terrorists would buy guns to use against us.* Like the many of the other responses on the 4473, the answers can't be easily verified but a lie is a felony and could mean prosecution and imprisonment. I consider it a no-brainer. And no prevention at all except to cover BATFE's you-know-what.
Speaking of stupid, the Brady campaign really went into the silly mode at about that time with the claim that terrorists were buying guns at gun shows (the famous "loophole") and (get this!) smuggling them to Iraq and Afghanistan! Probably concealed inside shipments of sand to Saudi Arabia.
Sometimes, I think those folks were around the corner when the Lord gave out brains.
