The .45 is a better carry weapon.
The 10mm might be ok for home defense - just be aware that the report is shockingly loud. While my sensitive ears can handle the occasional .45 or 9mm shot without ear protection, the 10mm is down-right painful (as I found out unintentionally)
The .45, 10mm, 9mm, .40 S&W, .38+P, .357, .44 magnum and a bunch of other rounds are all very effective at stopping bad guys.
