Glenn,
Small guns and knives are not a "modern" invention. Small knives were carried, probably more prevantly than today, for thousands of years. Also, small "pocket" guns have been around for centuries and also carried with great frequency in eras before ours.

As for the discussion, I agree that attitude, location, and convenience are all key attributes when a criminal selects a crime victim.
