BadMedicine, you may not have missed. The #6 shot at 27 yds. may not have had enough oomph to penetrate the fur, or, more likely, did penetrate but not enough to leave blood/hair trail. If there was penetration, it would be individual pretty small holes, and the surrounding fur could soak up any blood that oozed, before the wounds scabbed over. So no trail.

Bad news, I think you just wounded the critter.
