I don't think I like the idea of shooting a steel BB with varying diameter of .171 to .173 out of a barrel designed for a .172 copper jacket projectile. I know BBs are zinc or copper plated but it's just not something I would do to a gun designed for accuracy out to 500 yards.
17 Remington has a .172 bore groove diameter and a BB gun is .177 standard and .175 precision.
Just because it can be done doesn't make it a good idea.
